This increasing threatened native species was once a widespread blessing upon eastern North American woodlands clearing and edges. Prevention of natural floods has played a significant role in the decline of this beautiful species, and in turn has had a significant impact on the availability of nectar early in the season for both emerging bumble bees and solitary bees, as well as bee flies and numerous moths.

Virginia Bluebells are also an important host species for several moths, as well. All told, this is an invaluable native species whose restoration will surely have a significant net positive effect on pollinators, particularly due to it’s ability to flower in very shady places - a rare treat - as well as it being one of the first flowers to bloom each year.

A “true blue” flower, masses of Virginia Bluebells are an incredible sight, and combine amazingly with early season garden favorites such as daffodils. The latter blooms of this species also are a first food source for Ruby Throated Hummingbirds moving north for the warm season, an incredible sight of it’s own.

Care: Virginia Bluebells should be planted as early as the soil can be worked, for first year blooms. As such, the nursery will ship these out to you earlier than other plants (depending on your region, they may be sent between March and April, unless otherwise desired). They will leaf out very quickly and bloom for the spring season, soon after. They go dormant for the summer, making them even moreso a great fit with a rotation of bulbs and tubers. Every autumn, as desired, they can be divided. They will spread at a steady pace year-to-year, creating a blanket of blue in the spring, if desired.
